2/7 - Krispy Kreme Challenge - Who's in?
The Krispy Kreme Challenge is an annual,student-operated race in Raleigh, North Carolina benefiting the NC Children's Hospital. Beginning in 2004 with a mere 12 participants, the race has grown exponentially to a whopping 3,000 runners in the 2008 race and has rapidly become one of NC State University's newest traditions. Beginning at the NC State Belltower, each runner runs 2 miles to the Krispy Kreme store located on Peace St. in Raleigh. After downing a full dozen of the famous Krispy Kreme doughnuts, the runner must run the two miles back. All in one hour. The challenge attracts a wide range of runners from beginners to serious competitors hailing from all corners of the country. With an expected participation of 5,000 runners, we are expecting the 2009 race to be our greatest (and most beneficial) race yet.

Register online. Race starts at approximately 9am.

Options include:
CHALLENGER: $16.00 4 miles, 12 doughnuts, and a t-shirt.
CASUAL: $16.00 4 miles, some doughnuts, and a t-shirt.
SUPPORTER: $10.00 T-shirt only.

2/15 - St. Valentine's Massacre Marathon Relay
Scott from Off N Running says that Country Park in Greensboro is reserved for this annual race (as are the much envied hoodies). We expect for information to be posted on the
Off N Running website soon.

This is a full marathon, run solo or in 2 or 4 person teams. Last year we had three four person teams and one single man team. We are hoping to have at least that many this year! No experience necessary to run in the event, just a sense of humor and a willingess to end up slightly cold and sore. If you are interested in learning more about this event,
visit this post from last March.

Already know that you want to be on a team? Email Stephanie R. your full name, contact information and age ASAP so that she can start working on the team line-up. (Check the roster for her email adddress.)

2/21 - Coach Bubba 4M & 20K
Carolina Godiva Track Club will present the fifth annual Coach Bubba 20 km and 4 Mile Road Races on Saturday, February 21, 2009. Register online at
www.coachbubba.com.

From the Coachbubba.com website: Godiva Track Club established this event to honor Bruce Koenig, affectionately known as Coach Bubba, and his contributions to the running community. He was a founder of Godiva's Marathon Training Program as well as its Running Start program for those just beginning to run.Since its inception, the race has benefited The American Heart Association, the Triangle Rails to Trails Conservancy, and the American Tobacco Trail. This year, the primary charitable beneficiary is Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers (TROSA), a treatment and rehabilitation program founded in Durham. We're doing all that we can to make this a runner-friendly, memorable experience for all participants.

First Annual MRC Run of the Lights

Thanks to everyone who was able to join the MRC for the First Annual Run of the Lights. Even a little drizzle didn't stop the thirty plus members (and kids) who came out in their Santa hats and reflective gear to run a nice three mile loop through downtown Mebane. We stopped traffic and surprised a few patrons on Clay Street. Next year, we may have to call ahead to Dick & Jane's for a little on-the-go beverage!

A special thanks to the Rankins for planning and hosting this great event! Anyone up for a summertime evening run of the Mebane watering holes?
See you on Saturday....

(We still have a bunch of serving dishes and plastic containers from the party. Please send me an email to claim them!)

Volunteers needed for organizing trail runs

Due to injury, I will probably be taking some time off of running. Therefore, the MRC is seeking a volunteer or two who wouldn't mind organizing and leading some trail runs.

What is required?
  • A willingness to plan a specific meeting site, day, time, location and to map out a few routes over the next month or two - weekends or weekday evenings
  • Email me the info at least 3-4 days in advance so that I can post it to the MRC site
  • Hang around a bit and make sure everyone arrives back to the meeting site safely (yep...keep a cell phone on ya)

Send me an email or post a comment if you are interested. Two people would be preferred so that the same person doesn't have to be at every run.

The Mebane on the Move Family Fitness Festival will take place on Clay Street in downtown Mebane on September 27th from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The festival will include a 5K road race, 1-mile family fun run/walk, free fitness classes, a health and fitness expo, numerous kids activities, a bicycle rodeo and more.

5K Road Race
The 5K road race (3.1 miles) begins at 8:30 a.m. and is open to all runners and walkers. The course begins in downtown Mebane at the corner of Clay and 5th Streets and weaves throughout town on a slightly rolling course. Prizes will be given to the top three male and female finishers in each age group, and event t-shirts are guaranteed for the first 100 registrants. Registration forms can be downloaded at www.mebaneonthemove.com. Online registration is also available through Active.com. There will be a Friday evening packet pick-up option for all pre-registered participants. All proceeds benefit the Mebane on the Move initiative.

Family Fun Run/Walk, Bike Rodeo and Kids’ Activities
The family fun run/walk begins at 9:45 a.m. in the center of Mebane, on Clay Street between 3rd and 4th Streets. All fitness levels are welcome. Ribbons will be given to all kid finishers. The fun run/walk is all about fun – bring your entire family and help us celebrate Mebane on the Move. Other kids’ activities include a bicycle rodeo hosted by CycleSafe.org. The bicycle rodeo is designed to motivate kids to ride their bikes, educate them on proper riding safety and instruct them on the correct way to wear their bicycle helmets. Different events and stations in the rodeo help teach bicycle handling and safety skills. There will even be bicycle helmets available to purchase on site! Additional activities may include tumbling/gymnastics activities.

Health & Fitness Expo
The Health & Fitness Expo is a great way for families to introduce themselves to the many health and fitness opportunities in Mebane and the surrounding area. A wide variety of local health-related businesses and organizations will be offering engaging activities, such as drawings, games, give-a-ways, chair massages, nutrition seminars and much more. From healthy eating to strength training to preventative medicine – we'll have it all at the Health & Fitness Expo.

Free Fitness Classes & Demonstrations
The area's most popular fitness classes will be held every 45 minutes and are free for all participants. Classes include:
  • Yoga, Brenda Assante
  • Family Bootcamp, Annie Luxmore, Fitness Playground, LLC
  • Chi Running, Kari Wilkinson, K2 Fitness
  • Tae Kwon Do, Champions Martial Arts
  • Kettlebell Pump, Randy DeAngelo, CJETS Fitness Systems, LLC

Fitness demonstrations will also take place throughout the day, including dance from Xtreme Dance Academy and martial arts from Lee Brothers.

Mebane on the Move Initiative
Many local parents and families are looking for more convenient and affordable ways to get fit and make local healthy food choices. The Women's Club designed Mebane on the Move to help create these additional opportunities, educate residents about the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle and introduce Mebane to the many health and fitness options that already exist in the area. The Family Fitness Festival is the first step toward meeting these goals.

Following the Family Fitness Festival, the Mebane on the Move initiative will begin working toward making Mebane a Fit Community by creating wellness opportunities at school, work, home and throughout our neighborhoods. The Mebane on the Move team has a variety of projects in mind to meet these goals, such as creating community fitness programs, developing walking and fitness trails, improving healthy "dining out" options, and working with the Mebane Community Garden. Mebane on the Move is a partnership between the Women's Club, local businesses, healthcare providers, city government, schools and neighborhoods to make a difference in the lives of local families.

Eat Like a Fitness Competitor Workshop @ Fitness Playground

....from MRC member and local Mebane business owner, Annie Luxmore of the Fitness Playground

Ok, don't get scared - not exactly like a figure competitor. This does not mean tilapia and broccoli at every meal!

Recently, Kim and I have been getting many questions about her diet and how she was able to transform her body for her recent fitness competitions. We felt like we were answering questions here and there, but due to our brief encounters not able to give people the whole story. So, we have decided to compile the information and present it in way that is easy to understand and can be customized for your individual lives, goals and schedules.

Wednesday, August 27th, 7pm tp 9pm (light dinner included) $45

Topics Include:

  • Clean Eating Basics
  • Meal Planning
  • Meal Timing
  • Portion Sizes
  • Keys to Boosting Metabolism
  • Science of Appetite
  • Eating Out
  • And More

You will leave the workshop with a clean eating binder that includes all of the information covered in the workshop, as well as recipes, menu samples and an individual meal- planning chart. Send me an email or give me a call if you're interested!

Cheers,
Annie

Wanted: Graphic Designer for our Club Logo

Any running club members happen to know a graphic designer who might be willing to donate or give away their services for very little change in order to help us with our logo? The sources we've tried have not panned out. We'd be happy to write up a recommendation or put a link to their site on ours as advertising.

We have an idea of what we want, and even some pictures to start from, but no final logo to print on our T-shirts. Looking for a 2 color logo with our club name on it, in printable and sizable JPG format.

Send an email to mebanerunning@gmail.com if you have any suggestions.

Saturday morning - longer run question

We have quite a few runners training for long events right now. In light of this, do we want to consider having two start times so that we can all finish (and socialize) within 30 minutes of each other?

  • Would people running over 6-7 miles be interested in running at 7am and then possibly swinging by Espressions at 7:30am to join up with those running 2-5 miles?
  • Let us know your thoughts - Comment below or send an email to the usa.net account.

Either way, anyone up for 7 miles on Saturday the 2nd?

July 25, 2008

Route Options from Espressions

It seems as if Espressions is working out as a good meeting place for now, so here are some route options of various distances for the group to look at. Please feel free to suggest more or map them out and post the links in the Comments section.

See everyone on Saturday at 7:30am. Remember, new runners always welcome!

Congratulations to the Mebane Runners who participated in the Leapin' Lizard 5 and 10k races on May 17th, 2008. Thirteen runners, a junior member (baby Ethan) and our team manager & photographer (Sarah) all traveled to High Point for the event.

Great weather and a night race made for some great times! After our fifth or sixth award, the announcer asked 'what is the name of the Mebane running club?' Our loud reply, 'The Mebane Running Club,' was heard as far as the cars and the port-a-johns.

After cleaning up in the award categories, we took our medals and backpacks to Greensboro for dinner at
Natty Greene's. Thanks to all for the great evening!

Mebane Runners Compete in Fun & Charity Events 3.12.08

Published in the 3.12.08 edition of the Mebane Enterprise...

Members of the local Mebane Running Club and Fitness Playground's Boot Camp came together over the last several weekends to participate in local competitive and charity events. Four teams and one individual braved a cold day with threats of rain on February 17th , 2008 for Off 'n Running Sports' annual Valentine's Day Massacre Marathon and Marathon Relay. The event offered either a full marathon or a relay option for 2 or 4 person teams. The first participant ran a 2.2 mile leg and then three 1.6 mile loops, and the remaining three team members each ran four 1.6 mile loops to make a full marathon. Team members alternated with about 30-40 minutes of recovery time in between each lap. Throughout the event, participants and their families, including many from Mebane, were able to cheer on their fellow team members. Jack Mignosa won the overall individual event as the first finisher of the solo marathon category with a time of 3:01:09. Team Mebane 2 finished in second place at 3:09:43 for the 4 person, co-ed category. Team members included Wally Bixby, Denise Snyder, Barbara Taylor, and Chris Walker. Team Mebane 3, which included Elaine Bixby, Pete Elder, Sarah Elder and Steve Gray, finished in third place in the same category with a time of 3:15:02. The fourth team was Mebane 1, which finished second in the 'Geezer' category which included runners whose combined ages exceeded 160. This team included Laura Brown, Rod Snyder, Derek Waterhouse and Lynn Waterhouse. The Mebane Running Club's participation in the event was headed up by club member Stephanie Rankin. Last minute illness prompted Lynn Waterhouse and Rod Snyder to substitute for Stephanie and her husband Bob.

On February 23rd , 2008, the Coach Bubba 20 km and 4 mile races took place in Durham. The event was organized by the Carolina Godiva Track Club to honor Bruce Koenig, aka 'Coach Bubba' who passed away unexpectedly while leading a group run. This year the primary beneficiary of the race was the Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers (TROSA), a treatment and rehabilitation program founded in Durham. Mebane Running Club member Rachel Massai finished 8th in her age group in the 4 mile event with a finishing time of 34:43.

Saturday, March 1st brought the 19th annual Zeta Tau Alpha Franklin Street 5K Race to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. It was a perfect day for running for the nearly 400 participants, with near 60 degree temperatures and sunny skies. Mebane Running Club members won first place in three age categories, including Sarah Elder in the 25-29 group with a time of 23:20, Elaine Bixby in the 30-34 group with a 27:01 finish and Wally Bixby in the 35-39 group coming in at 21:11. Annie Luxmore of the Fitness Playground challenged her Bootcamp and CardioFit program participants to run in the event. Three members of the group received third in their respective age categories, including King Nelson at 28:38 in the 35-39 group, Annie Luxmore at 27:48 in the 25-29 group and Kim Powell-Bailey at 29:44 in the 35-39 category. Tara Corbett finished twelfth in the 25-29 group with a finishing time of 37:23. Mike Aydt finished fifth in the 50-54 age group with a time of 28:59. Mike's daughter Melanie is a member of the race organizers, the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority at UNC Chapel Hill.

Members of these two groups will be participating in many more events as the spring racing season takes off, including the Carrboro Classic Endurance Sports Festival and the Dogwood Festival 5K. The Mebane Running Club welcomes new beginner, recreational and competitive runners to its Saturday morning runs. They meet at 8 am each Saturday in front of Sweet Tooth Heaven on Clay Street. Coffee and conversation after the group run is optional but highly encouraged. Email mebanerunning@gmail.com for more information. The Fitness Playground is in a new facility on North 5th Street, offering Bootcamp, CardioFit, Indoor Cycling, Yoga and personal training.
